Nigeria has 65,000 prisoners

Comptroller General of Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS), Dr. Peter Ekpendu, has said the number of convicted and awaiting-trial inmates in custody has risen to 65,000, expressing concern that the figure has put severe pressure on facilities.Speaking after the launch of the Human Rights Training Manual and Training Guide to NPS by the Swiss Embassy, he said congestion is peculiar with urban prisons, even as he argued that the criminal justice system and all the arresting law enforcement agencies should equally share in the blame.
